Buffavento Castle was one of three castles built along the Kyrenia range by the Byzantines to ward off Arab raiders. The first recorded mention dates back to 1191 during the conquest of the island by Richard the Lionheart. The very name, Buffavento, means wind defying which is very appropriate when viewing its location. Perched at an altitude of 954m (3,130ft) above sea level and wrapped around the mountain peak, it is a challenge just to reach it. There is not too much of the castle to see but the views along the mountain range are spectacular, one of the best in North Cyprus. Located East of Kyrenia, near the Acapulco Beach Resort, on a hill overlooking the sea is Vrysi, one of the first Neolithic settlements.
